Along the Oaxaca coast from Huatulco to Puerto Escondido, are some amazing restaurants.  From authentic Mexican cuisine to worldly plates, there is no shortage of great places to dine.  Here are my top picks of great places to eat along the Oaxacan Riviera.

Let’s Begin With Breakfast…

#1: Cordelia’s ($) – This wonderful restaurant is minutes away from my condo in Puerto Angel.  Located in Playa Panteon, Cordelia’s has delicious authentic Mexican cuisine.

A typical weekend consists of heading to Cordelia’s for breakfast.  One of my favorite dishes is the traditional Huevos Rancheros, a popular Mexican dish consisting of fried eggs served upon lightly fried corn tortillas topped with a tomato-chili sauce, refried beans and slices of avocado on the side.  Cordelia’s serves great Mexican Pluma Hidalgo coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice that can’t be beat!

After breakfast we often set up in front of Cordelia’s on the beach to enjoy the day with a morning paddleboard or snorkel in the beautiful and calm bay of Playa Panteon.

In the afternoon, the ice cold cervezas hit the spot and delicious seafood is served fresh from the local fisherman.  Some of my favorite lunch and dinner items include the camarones empanizados (breaded shrimp), shrimp or tuna stuffed avocado or spicy dorado (mahi-mahi).[hr]

#2: El Alquimista ($$) – Whether you are in the mood for pizza, seafood or something from the grill, El Alquimista is the place to visit. Located at the west end of Playa Zipolite, just underneath Shambala and minutes from Puerto Angel, El Alquimista provides relaxing atmosphere and something for everyone.  At sunset the tiki torches are lit and the relaxing music set the mood for a great dinner and experience.

Some of my favorite dishes include the mixed grill platter for 2, seared tuna with cashews blue cheese and fig crostini.

And let’s not forget the drinks.  You’ve got to try the mango margarita…dee-lish!

El Alquimista is great for a romantic dinner with your mate or a fun night out with friends & family.[hr]

#3: Bahia de la Luna – La Boquilla ($$$) – This amazing restaurant is hidden in the rugged cliffs and tropical foliage of La Boquilla, a beautiful protected bay with clear waters & white sand. The Bahia de la Luna restaurant is located on the beautiful beach under thatched palapas and coco palms.

Specializing in freshly prepared seafood and regional dishes, this is a dining experience you will remember.  An evening dinner involves a choice of 2 appetizers and 2 entrees, followed by choice of homemade ice cream and flavored mezcal. For reservations, contact 958-589-5020 or info@bahiadelaluna.com. You may drop in for lunch, however they do require 24 hrs notice for dinner. Please be aware, the road to La Boquilla can be challenging to drive.

We have driven our truck there once and it was quite rough (and we have 4X4). We have taken a boat ride out of Playa Panteon/Cordelia’s at sunset.  This made for a very memorable and enjoyable night![hr]

#4: La Termita – San Agustinillo ($) – Pizza Baby!

Upon moving here, I was very surprised by the Italian presence along the Oaxacan coastline, due to many immigrants settling in the area in the 60’s.  There are great Italian restaurants and cuisine all along the coastline, and La Termita is one of those places. Located on the main road in San Agustinillo, this place can’t be beat for amazing wood oven pizza and calzone.  Enjoy your meal on the beach or in the restaurant while you watch the chef whip up your favorite slice of pie – yum![hr]

La Providencia#5: La Providencia – Zipolite ($$) – Located across the road and right before El Alquimista is La Providencia. This must visit restaurant offers one of the best contemporary Mexico cuisine in the area. The ambience is beautiful and will relax you as you dine. Some of the specialties at La Providencia include coconut shrimp in mango sauce, fresh tuna or beef medallions & stuffed chillies. There are also a few sitting areas in the restaurant that you may enjoy before or after your meal. Although accepting of walk ins, the restaurant does fill up quickly by dinnertime. They will accept reservations by phone. Their contact number is 958-100-9234.
