Barra de la Cruz is a village located east of Huatulco and is the perfect place for those seeking some great surf and to get away from it all.
The break to the right of the beach is long and fast, making it perfect for experienced surfers. This is best from March to early October and generally at their best in June and July. November to February offers good waves for beginners. You can rent surfboards for about $100 pesos a day at El Chontal or Canañas Pepe. They also give surf lessons and bird-watching tours.
There’s not much to do except surf and swim at Barra but it does offer showers, washrooms and a restaurant. The municipality of Barra de la Cruz imposes an 8pm curfew.
To get there, take highway 200 east about 20 kms from Huatulco toward Salina Cruz. Head south at the Barra de la Cruz sign and follow the road through the village. You will arrive at a small gate where you will have to pay about 20 pesos to enter and use the beach car parking lot. Drive about 5-10 minutes where you will arrive to the parking lot area. From there it’s a short walk across the beach.
This laid back rustic paradise is the perfect place to unwind and take in the beauty of the Oaxaca coast. Great vibes and great surfing!
